Q&A With Owner Hamish Haggitt
What does ITT do?
We are in Telecommunications with our core business being Telephone Systems. We sell, install and service phone systems for businesses of all types and sizes. Every business needs to make, take and hold and transfer phone calls. We have the solution for whatever any business is looking for in a phone system.
How long has ITT been about and what has changed over this time?
We started over 16 years ago with what we referred to back then as “Key Systems”, and “PABX’s”. Over the years voice technology has evolved and blended with Computer technology, so now we deliver “IP Phone Systems”, “VoIP” and “Unified Communications”. Really it’s the same thing, with ITT making the most of the ongoing technological improvements.
When you say “IP”, is that the same as “VoIP” and does that mean cheaper phone calls?
Now that’s both a good question and a common misconception. Yes, you can definitely get cheaper phone calls, with your voice sharing your data connections. Particularly between multiple locations, however that is not usually the business driver to go IP.
The main advantages are increases in efficiency and productivity that comes from blending all of your business systems together.
Picture the scene where all your databases, like email, voicemail, CRM, service delivery systems, field staff computers and mobile devices, are automatically keeping each other and the IP phone system updated, regardless of how many branches you have or how many staff you have. It is then you can start to appreciate the efficiencies and productivity gains that are possible.
That’s what is driving the need for the IP Phone Systems in businesses, rather than just cheap calls.
What are the strengths of ITT?
That’s easy; firstly we have outstanding staff of whom I am very proud. We really buck the trend of staff jumping from place to place. They all know their stuff and always put their best foot forward. We have a strong culture of supporting each other, and despite what anyone’s primary role might be they will always muck in to help each other. I refer to their boundryless attitude. Everyone appreciates it and our staff, stay with us for a very long time.
ITT’s next key strength is our clients. We still have our first ever client who we signed up back in 1994, and that is a typical story which has repeated countless times across our client base. Our clients know that if they have a problem, we have a problem, until it is resolved. We try to develop lasting relationships.
Our other key strength is our suppliers. We have always selected best of breed products from reputable brands. Our staff have confidence in our suppliers and their products, and that translates to our clients having the same level of confidence in ITT.
Where do you see ITT in 3, 5, 10 years time?
That’s the old “crystal ball” question that I like to ask of my clients. Growth, of course, but that doesn’t necessarily mean ITT getting bigger. Day by day we deliver to our clients, the means to greater efficiency and productivity. We will continue to apply the same lessons to ourselves. I’ll be happy if we can keep our friendly, happy, family, culture, while doing a greater volume of business in a more efficient manner. Oh yes, and have more fun doing it!
